The Universal Christian Church of the New Jerusalem presents her weekly review of key reports concerning the unceasing persecution of Christians across the globe. The events chronicled herein are commended to the prayers of the faithful of the Holy Mother Church.
Nigeria
In Plateau State, located in Nigeria’s Middle Belt region, the targeted killing of Christians by Fulani extremists continues unabated. On Wednesday, 17 June, at around 6 pm, two volunteer Christian civilian guards from the Berom ethnic group were ambushed and shot dead by gunmen in the Rantya-Gyel area of Jos South County. The two young men were on patrol defending their community — a routine security measure that is now necessary in many Christian villages in Plateau State, as they have been left largely unprotected by the state authorities.
Congo
In the eastern provinces of the country, Islamic State Central Africa Province (ISCAP), militants have intensified their attacks against Christians. In the Beni Territory of North Kivu, eleven Christians were shot dead in two separate assaults carried out on 11 and 13 June. On 20 June, a Christian man was beheaded in Mayangose, Ituri province. Then, on 24 June, eight Christians were brutally decapitated in Mungbere, Watsa Territory. This marks the first time the Islamic State has targeted Christian believers in the Haut-Uélé province, signalling a dangerous expansion of the jihadist threat into new regions of the country.
Sudan
Around 18 June, the Catholic priest Father Youhanna Al-Amin was killed in the Nuba Mountains at Kauda. Despite the violence that has been plaguing the region, he had chosen to remain alongside his people. According to local sources, his murder was an act of retaliation: the priest had reported the theft of medicines intended for the local population after an armed group broke into his church.
Uganda
In the eastern district of Mayuge, on Sunday 14 June, at around 7 pm, 37-year-old David Musobya was savagely attacked while returning home with his wife, Elizabeth Nakato, after attending an evening worship service and a street evangelism outreach event. Approximately nine Muslim men approached them, challenged him for preaching Christ and for his using of the cross. They then struck him on the head with blunt objects, threw him to the ground, trampled, and beat him. Having been rescued and rushed to the hospital, Musobya remains in a critical condition.
Pakistan
On Monday, 22 June, Siddique Masih, a 40-year-old Catholic father of four and a brick kiln worker from the village of Gohar Chak No. 8 in the Kasur District of Punjab, was murdered. He was killed by a Muslim co-worker following a dispute at work, during which the Christian worker was barred from drinking from the communal water cooler and was reprimanded for touching an Islamic text with “impure hands.” This incident is yet another example of the deeply ingrained contempt for Christians, who are marginalised as unclean, escalating to the point of murder.
The Universal Christian Church of the New Jerusalem is united in prayer with these brothers and sisters as is preparing to celebrate the Feast of Maria Giuseppina Norcia’s return to the Heart of the Father. The example of She who made Her life a total offering, surrendering Herself unreservedly to the Divine Will, reminds us – along with the witness of all those who are “persecuted for the sake of righteousness” (Mt 5:10) – that the Cross is the threshold through which we enter the Heart of God. We entrust these souls and their afflictions to our spiritual Mother, so that, just as Maria Giuseppina’s witness was a seed of conversion for us, so too may the witness of these sons become a seed of resurrection for many.
