PONTIFICAL DECREE

Solemn Feast of the
Most Sacred Heart of Jesus

PREFACE

  1. The Feast of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus is an ancient and solemn feast, established by Jesus, who revealed to Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque: “I promise you that my Heart will expand to pour out in abundance the influences of its divine love upon all those who honour it in this way.”

  2. This Feast is still celebrated nineteen days after the Feast of Pentecost, on the Friday following the octave of the Feast of Corpus Christi, traditionally celebrated on a Thursday but, in recent times, celebrated on a Sunday in many countries.

  3. In order to promote its wider dissemination among the faithful, to give it the greatest prominence, and to enliven more and more the profound feeling that must bind the hearts of the sons to the Heart of the Son, who is the Father, in union with the Heart of Mary, fragrant Flower that binds the hearts of the sons to the Creator, I decree that the Feast be celebrated in an extended form, from Friday (nineteen days after the Feast of Pentecost) to Sunday (twenty-one days after the Feast of Pentecost), interspersed and in union with the Feast of Mary’s Immaculate Heart, celebrated on Saturday.
